In 1853 Corvallis was renamed due to a city legislative assembly. The new name—replacing Marysville that had previously been the town’s name-Corvallis came from the Latin name for the ‘heart of the valley’-‘cor vallis’. In 1857 the town was incorporated as a city and briefly served as the Oregon Territory Capital until Salem was selected as a permanent seat. The original name of Marysville is said to have come from Mary’s Peak—after the Virgin Mary-but there is too much speculation and too many other legends to be sure of its real origin.

Beavers versus Ducks

Nowadays, Corvallis is more famous for one specific area of entertainment and that is sports. The Oregon State University campus-which seems to take up most of the town-has a long establish sports schedule, including college football, basketball and baseball, played by both men and women teams. The Oregon State Beavers teams have many hundreds of thousands of followers and the rivalry between the nearby Oregon University Ducks has become a yearly fight known statewide as ‘the civil war’. Of course, it’s all very friendly and there is no specific ‘war’ or any violence, but it is a huge thing whichever team wins. Currently the Ducks have the upper hand over the Beavers, but the 2013 civil war was so close-only one point separating the teams—the Beavers almost had it.

Because of the nature and growth of Corvallis it has a huge number of businesses and services to cater for the towns folk as well as nearby locals. Corvallis lies about thirty-five miles south of Salem, in Benton county, and has a population of around 55,000. There are many local business people who have had long running family businesses for many years in the town. Businesses that serve the community, can be found all over, such as tire stores, restaurants, convenience stores, and auto body repair in Corvallis, as well as many others.

Many people come to Corvallis simply because they choose to study there as students, but many end up staying because they find local jobs, love the area, or simply just forget to leave. Because of its close proximity to Salem and the Oregon Coast, Corvallis is perfectly situated as a gateway to the coastal region from the Willamette valley.
