Without going into the question of the merits of buying a foreign car instead of a domestic model; let’s look into why you might choose to have a Japanese automobile for use in the Windy City. Not all that long ago; such cars were largely thought of as being inferior even though the Japanese automobile industry is almost as old as our own.

What Is It That You Like About Your Choice?

Maybe you are impressed by the large scale organization behind this particular marque? Although they are only rated as 22ND in terms of worldwide production; they are owned by Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), a mighty industrial conglomerate in its own right. In addition, the Toyota Motor Corporation owns 16.5% of FHI so there should be scope for ideas sharing and/or collaboration.

On a more whimsical front, the name and logo might attract you. Translated out of the Japanese; the name equates to the star cluster M45 which we call the Pleiades (“Seven Sisters”). According to legend; one of the Sisters is invisible – which is why only six appear on the logo. There is an inference that the appearance of only six alludes to the number of companies that merged top become FHI.

If you are of a more practical bent with an interest in automobile engineering; you could have been attracted to the technical differences found in this marque. For example; they make widespread use of what is known as the “boxer engine”.

Boxer Engines

Boxer engines are of a flat, horizontally opposed four cylinder design where two sets of two cylinders are placed on each side of a central crankshaft. (Traditional straight line multi-cylinder engines all have their cylinders vertically above the crankshaft).
Boxer engines are so named because their opposed piston motion somewhat resembles two boxers facing each other and touching gloves before a fight. They were first developed for use in automobiles by Karl Benz in 1897. Austrian engineer Ferdinand Porsche also used them for most of his early designs for both Volkswagen and Porsche cars.

Although more expensive to produce, a boxer engine runs very smoothly and takes up minimum space which can be advantageous when using it with all wheel drive transmission.

This is partly why Subaru can offer all wheel drive versions of their vehicles so easily. The Impreza is produced with boxer engines from 1.5 to 2.5 in capacity with a turbocharger on the sportier models.

They are made in both front wheel and all wheel drive configurations. A good place to inspect, test drive and buy your New Subaru Impreza For Chicago use could well be the showrooms of Hawk Subaru in Joliet. Visit their website for more details.
