What’s the difference between Monograde and Multigrade Motor Oil?

Anyone looking at the various types of motor oil today is probably aware of the fact that the average engine oil supplier divides all examples of this important fluid into one of two categories. While there are probably many other ways to classify oil, it seems like everyone now sorts bottles by which of these two groups of motor oil their contents fit into. The difference has to do with viscosity.

Viscosity refers to how much liquid is able to resist the forces that cause it to flow. Monograde oil is simply motor oil in a fairly pure state. The name comes from the fact that it only contains one grade of substance, which is, of course, the oil itself. Since the viscosity of motor oil changes based on temperature, it will flow more readily at high temperatures than at lower temperatures.

The multi-grade oil contains a number of special additives that keep the viscosity of the oil fairly constant regardless of what temperature it’s at. For instance, SAE 10W-30 is a multi-grade oil. It tends to offer an engine fairly usable viscosity levels regardless of which temperature the oil is at. While it does become too thin at extreme temperatures, it otherwise won’t present a problem for vehicles.
