The Methods of Creating Cold Rolled Steel Tubing

Cold rolled steel tubing is a great way to reduce the total circumference of the tubing you need, as well as experience heavier-duty tubing that will stand the test of time and the stresses of your processes. During the cold rolling process, the shape of the metal is changed without heating it up as is done for many other processes relating to metal. This allows for the decrease in thickness, as well as an increase in hardness and strength.

Skin Rolling

If you are only decreasing the thickness of the metal by a small fraction, skin cold rolling is the preferred method. Through this method, the metal will decrease in thickness by small amounts, typically between ¬Ĺ and one percent of the total thickness. Because this method allows the metal to maintain its high level of ductility, it can easily be rolled into the tubing you require for your business. The tubing can also be bent at just about any angle without impacting the integrity of the tube.

Quarter Hard Rolling

Another process common to cold rolled steel tube is quarter hard rolling. In this process, the thickness can be changed by greater amounts, often as much as 50 percent thinner. However, the level of ductility is impacted somewhat with this method. The metal that has gone through this process can still be rolled over itself to create the tubing you need without cracking or otherwise impacting the integrity of the metal.

Half Hard and Full Hard

There are two more processes that are typically associated with cold rolling metal. The half hard and full hard rolling methods are typically not favorable to creating the tubes you need, though. This is because metal that is cold rolled through the half hard method can only bend up to 90 degrees, while full hard cold rolled metal can only be bent to 45 degrees. This makes rolling into a tube impossible.

With both of these processes, the thickness of the steel is reduced. The steel is also hardened and strengthened to allow the tubes to last longer than typical steel tubes.
