It would be interesting to find out how many people dislike their kitchen sink. The sink may have been already installed when they bought the house or the sink they selected was simply the wrong choice. If a couple has discovered that they enjoy cooking together and only have one sink, it’s awkward. The home may have been equipped with a shallow stainless steel sink that is just not deep enough. The old sink might be chipped and a less-than-desirable color. Whatever the reason, it’s time to remodel the kitchen and replace that old sink.
When choosing a new sink, it’s all about function. Style is just about at the end of the list. Think about how you cook. Would it be nice to have room for two people to do veggie prep at the same time? Do you habitually hand wash some of the cooking pots as you cook? If so, a double sink with one over-sized and one standard size bowl would work well. Do things get thrown into the sink? If yes, stainless is probably the best choice. Enamel-coated cast iron sinks are probably the most attractive, but aren’t designed for really hard use. Solid surface sinks that are an integral part of a counter top are very easy to clean, but can be damaged if a hot pan is set directly on them. Composite sinks are available at a lower price and in many colors, but aren’t as durable.
Faucets put the finishing touch on the sink. Most faucet finishes (chrome, pewter, etc.) work well in a hard-use kitchen. Brass finishes, while attractive, should be reserved for very low-use sinks. A spray arm, garbage disposal and hot water dispenser are very useful extras to consider.
