Everyone Needs House Insurance

Your home is your castle, or at least that’s the way the saying goes. But today’s houses don’t need to be protected by motes and turrets. Today the most important thing to purchase to protect your home is house insurance. House insurance can protect you in the case of a natural disaster, weather event, fire, and even terrorist attacks. So what are the most important things to include in your house insurance policy?

The Home Itself

The first thing to include in your policy is your home itself. Usually this is a fairly obvious point, but make sure that the structure is protected so you can rebuild in the case of damage.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance protects you if someone is injured on your property. Whether they slip and fall on your newly polished stairs or their car is damaged when a branch falls from the tree in your driveway. If you are potentially liable to pay damages to anyone who enters your home, you’re better off having liability house insurance.

Other Structures on the Property

Do you have a tool shed? A garage? A gazebo? If there are any other buildings on the property, make sure they’re included in your house insurance plan.

Personal Property

Included in your house insurance will be the coverage of everything in your home. There are a lot of things that will not be possible to replace with money, but for the rest it’s important to include information in your policy. In fact, you should make a list of all property that has any value and keep that list somewhere safe outside of your home. It’s okay that the list will need to be updated, at least if you write one now you’ll have somewhere to start.

Loss of Use

In addition to having a house insurance policy that will pay for the repair of your home and belongings, you should be sure to have a loss of use clause. This means that if you cannot live in your home because of damage, you’ll be able to stay somewhere else without paying for it. Many house insurance policies offer loss of use, but you may need to request that it is included.

Don’t neglect to purchase house insurance and be sure that the coverage is adequate for a disaster. The hope is that you’ll never have to use it, but it’s much better to feel safe knowing it’s there than to not have house insurance when you need it.
