When you go away to college for the first time, safety is one of your top priorities. Western Washington University off campus housing gives you the opportunity to be independent and make your own decisions. However, college students can also be more vulnerable to theft, robberies, and other forms of crime. Before you move in, it’s important to know that your apartment complex takes your safety seriously.

How Can You Make Sure that You’re Moving into a Safe Facility?

Before you move in, take a tour of the apartment complex and talk to a few of the staff members. Here’s a few questions you can ask before you move in:

  • Do they have security guards on the premises?
  • Is there a 24-hour monitoring system?
  • Are non-residents allowed in the facility at any time?
  • Can non-residents use the amenities?
  • What’s their policy on having guests over?
  • Does each door have its own unique key?
  • Are the bedroom doors lockable?
  • Do they monitor the parking lot with security cameras?
  • What’s the neighborhood like around the complex?
  • Do they have staff members available 24 hours a day?
  • Who can you call if you need help?
  • Are there panic buttons located anywhere in the building?

When you know what to expect, it’ll be easier to decide if this is the right apartment complex or if you should seek housing elsewhere. Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you want–the staff members should take their residents’ safety just as seriously as you do.
