Recent research has shown that the labeling of a product does not guarantee that the product was made where it says it was. Another research reports that 80% of consumers today prefer getting beauty products made in USA to imported ones. It has, however, proven a tad too difficult to differentiate between genuine and counterfeit beauty products. Here are some fairly patriotic tips to get those genuine beauty products.

Know how to differentiate: This might come as shock but ‘Made in USA’ and ‘Made in America’ are not interchangeable. Made in America includes products made in Canada and Mexico too according to the NAFTA agreement signed between the three countries in1994. Beauty products with the ‘Made in USA’ Label, however, according to FTC have to be produced in the USA alone. This is a requirement companies have to meet before using this label.

Watch out for the wording: This complicates matters further. ‘Assembled in USA’ and ‘Made in USA’ are different. The former suggests that the product was put together in the USA but does not necessarily ascertain all the products to be from the US.

The spelling: As you check the label, be sure to check the spelling of the product itself. This is one of the surest determining products from China. Most times, names are misspelt either by the addition or subtraction of a latter. For instance, the name ‘flag’ may be written as ‘flagg’. Overseas manufacturers are, however, getting aware of this fact and are working around the clock to make these errors harder to detect.

Be skeptical: Prices of genuine USA products do not have the luxury of varying greatly in price. As such, if a particular product seems to be offering an insane deal, especially online, think twice. If it is too good, chances are, it’s not true.

Be wary of the flag: You should not always be satisfied with a beauty product at the sight of the American flag. The placement of the flag is not always synonymous with where the product was manufactured. For some, it is easier to stick the flag than to explain the contents of the product. Many trust the flag symbol. But even when the flag is stuck on the side of the packaging, confirm to see that it is indeed ‘Made n USA’.
