One of the best ways to take care of your teeth is by visiting a general dentist in Oahu at least every six months. This will allow for your teeth to be cleaned and any issues to be detected by a dental professional.

There are two ways a dentist will work to restore your teeth if decay is found. The level of decay will dictate to the dental professional which restoration will work best for you.

The Direct Restoration

If you visit the dentist and a small cavity is found, the general dentist in Oahu will likely suggest a direct restoration. This is when a tooth is directly filled with a specific type of composite material recommended by a dentist.

The dentist will evaluate your tooth and if the level of decay is below the number six, a direct restoration can be completed. Larger amount of decay that are above the number six will require a more invasive restoration type.

The Indirect Restoration

If you have tooth that is severely damaged by decay, you will be required to have an indirect restoration completed. A direct restoration is also referred to as a crown and generally requires at least two visits to the dentist office for completion.

The first visit involves the dentist prepping the tooth for the crown. This process may include removing the decay surrounding the tooth and shaping the tooth for preparation.

Once all the decay has been removed and prepped, the dentist will take an impression of the tooth. This will be sent to a dental lab where the crown will be created to restore the tooth.
When the crown comes back to the dentist the patient will be called back into the office and the crown will be cemented onto the tooth. It is possible some adjustments may be required by the dentist and this will may involve shaping the crown for a better fit.
