Over the years dental implants have changed dentistry dramatically. Prior to dental implants, if an individual lost one or more teeth to decay or trauma the options were either a bridge or full or partial dentures, both of which were problematic.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a replacement tooth root. Like natural tooth roots, the implant is secured directly into the jaw bone. The implant is not visible once the procedure has been completed; the implant is used to support a crown.

A dental implant is a titanium stud that looks somewhat like a small screw. Titanium is the material of choice because it is strong, lightweight and most important; it is biocompatible and will not be rejected by the body.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

Anyone that is in good general health and has lost one or more natural teeth is a candidate for dental implants in West Chicago. People that suffer from diabetes, oral cancer, or uncontrolled gum disease may not be good candidates.

What is the procedure of placing the implant?

Placing the implant is a three stage process; the implantation will take place in your dentist’s office.

The dentist or oral surgeon will prepare the jaw; the implant is properly positioned and placed directly into the site. The implant is covered for a period of three to six months while it becomes one with the jawbone.

Once the implant is stabilized and has fused with the bone it is exposed and covered with an extension post. It takes a few more months for the gum tissue to properly heal.

Once the gums are healed the dentist fits a crown to the implant extension.

Once in place the dental implant is as stable as any natural tooth, it does not have to be removed for cleaning nor is there any need to interfere with the teeth either side of the implant. With good oral care, dental implants will last a lifetime.
